Cost-down reviews of plastic moulded parts
25 November 2024
If you restrict your cost-down reviews to the manufacturing of the plastic part, the results are likely to be very limiting - broaden your thinking to incorporate the wider manufacturing process and you'll stand a chance of more radical savings.
Making savings on the cost of manufacturing plastic parts
Once the tooling is in place, the options for making any radical 'cost-down' savings are extremely limited. As the industry pricing squeeze continues, those moulders who simply reduce margins to keep machines may appear to deliver the result the OEM needs, however the truth is they are putting their supply chain at greater risk.
Innovation is the key to significantly reducing the cost of plastic parts
Once a part is in production, the 'cost-down' manufacturing exercise is very limited. You may have a more efficient machine which uses less energy and operates at a faster cycle. The plastic material may be substituted for a new less expensive polymer claiming to deliver the same performance, or the moulder could simply choose to reduce their margin. The only way to realistically shift the cost dramatically is to review the supply chain within which the part functions. This presents the opportunity to innovate and opens up the thinking to a wider array of cost saving opportunities.
TEX Plastics are masters of 'cost down' through innovation
Working collaboratively with our clients we've discovered ways to reduce the price of manufacture of the finished product, often whilst making it more environmentally sustainable. Whether this is fewer road miles, consolidation of 'value add services' or some other 're-thinking' of how the part being made ends up in the clients finished product, TEX Plastic have the most comprehensive range of services in-house and we believe it is more extensive than any other UK moulder. This means we have more ways to help you identify savings – so why not put us to the test?
